Curriculum Night

I am not sure about the rest of you, but I am excited about Monday night at Meghan's house. Oh to have a night to hang out, chit chat, and look through the plethora of curriculums that others have used. It almost makes my giddy inside! :) I am a knowledge junkie and can't get enough on certain things... one of those being curriculums. There, now all of you know one of my little secrets. hehe!
What kind of homeschool family are you? Did you know that there are many methods or philosophies of homeschooling? I'll be honest, I did not, until last year when I began to research for the girls 1st curriculum. Wow I was fascinated! Being brought up in a traditional public school I assumed there was only one real way to learn. With that said, I am so glad that my kids are being given a chance to have a one of a kind education based on their needs. So for those who are interested or maybe just do not know (like me) here are some/most of the homeschooling methods/philosophies. I hope  you find yourself in this just like I did. It has been a help for me in choosing curriculums.
  1. The Classical Method- follows the Trivium- check out Susan Wise Bauer
  2. The Literature Based Method- examples include Sonlight & WinterPromise
  3. The Workbox Method- less philosphy more practicality- system
  4. The Leadership Education Method- also called Thomas Jefferson Education
  5. The Eclectic Education- mix of methods
  6. The Traditional Method- textbooks, worksheets,etc.- ex: Abeka, Rod & Staff
  7. The Unit Study Method- examples: KONOS, 5 in a Row
  8. The Charlotte Mason Method- ex: Ambleside online
  9. The Unschooling Method- interest-led learning, relaxed schooling- 5 steps
I myself fall into the Electic category. I am very structured in certain areas and much more free in others. I hope this helps those who need more information to find the path that is the best for them. There is a great blog about this on simple homeschool that includes more information.
